I've been traveling for three weeks and so far I've stayed at five hotels. Five really nice hotels. Hotels with great service and fancy design and lots of cool features. But one of the things all previous four have failed to figure out is: where to put shower towel hooks.
My experience in general is that most hotels do not have enough hooks in the bathroom for towels and robes, especially if there's more than one person sharing the room.
All of the mostly five-star spots I've been staying in on this trip have had super fancy bathroom set-ups. Glass showers, mirrored showers, showers with minimalist design (loved) and maximum personal viewing (hated). But I kept running into the same problem: Where do I put my towel so that I don't have to exit the shower and drip water all over the floor to get it? Most had a towel bar on the outside of the door, but that can be awkward to reach when you're inside the shower trying to struggle around the half-open door.
My humble opinion is that the hook or bar should be placed so that you only have to crack open the shower door to be able to reach it without any effort. Not only is that the best way to stay cozy so that the full-blast a/c doesn't freeze your exposed pieces, but it's also much safer. I've taken a hard fall in a hotel bathroom before, so I am not eager to risk losing my footing again by sloshing around on a tile floor when I'm trying to get to my towel.
This should be a simple thing, right? It's so obvious. But I guess in the rush to make snazzy modern-feeling bathrooms, hotels don't always test out hook placement. However it happened, the Shangri-La solved it: They've put a hook right outside the door. I will simply have to reach out, grab it, and pull it inside so I can dry off before I re-enter the cold dry world outside. Even better the hook is a double, so I can hang my hotel robe on the other one. And if I was staying here with my husband, we'd still have hooks to spare: There are three additional double-hooks located around the bathroom, and four towel bars. Because there's never enough hooks to dry your towels either.
Take a look:
Kudos, Shangri-La, for the smart number and placement of so simple a necessity.
Now if we could just talk about the outlet situation…
